UKTI Yorkshire and the Humber appoints new deputy director

The government organisation that helps local businesses to explore and thrive in overseas markets has strengthened its regional team with the appointment of a new deputy director.

Susan Waterson will support the delivery of UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) services across Yorkshire and the Humber in partnership with regional director Mark Robson and a network of international trade advisers.

She previously worked for the Department for Work & Pensions, Department of Education, the Sector Skills Council and local authorities. She has also worked for former regional development agencies Yorkshire Forward and the Welsh Development Agency.

Ms Waterson said: “I’m delighted to join a dynamic team that is already helping thousands of businesses in the region to make great strides in successfully competing in international markets. I look forward to continuing this great work, while implementing new programmes and strategies that will enable us to move forward into new areas.”

The appointment comes as UKTI Yorkshire and the Humber prepares for Export Week in November, a five-day schedule of events geared towards newcomers to global trading, as well as existing exporters looking to expand their operations.

Recent figures show that export orders both in Yorkshire and nationally are turning negative for the first time since the start of 2013 following a downturn in the Eurozone economy, an increase in political risks and a stronger Sterling exchange rate.

Manufacturing organisation EEF said that while growth in manufacturing remains positive in Yorkshire the demand for exports is now more uncertain than for some time.
