Week of events aims to promote a culture of enterprise in region

THOUSANDS of people in Yorkshire are expected to take part in Global Entrepreneurship Week, which begins on Monday.

More than 150 events have been organised in this region, including sessions on enterprise, careers and city development, and events for schools in Leeds, Wakefield, York and Hull.

There are similar festivals taking place in a further 100 countries during the week, which runs until November 21.

Jane Walton, policy director at the Leeds-based Young People's Enterprise Forum, a not-for-profit organisation which is supporting events in Yorkshire andNorth Lincolnshire, said: "Like the rest of the country, our region has had a tough and testing year – not least with the recent spending cuts announcement – but entrepreneurship never seems to falter, a fact backed up by the level of activity in this area

for Global Entrepreneurship Week.

"At last count we had over 150 individual events registered on the website, which will involve thousands of people.

"The enterprising talents showcased across Yorkshire and the Humber will inspire innovation, imagination and creativity, embed entrepreneurship into our culture, help turn business ideas into reality and, ultimately, will boost our economy for decades to come."

Children from 21 primary schools in Hull will hear a talk from Claire Young, the Wakefield-born former The Apprentice contestant and also learn about how a city generates wealth.

Students at Leeds University will take part in two days of enterprise challenges before being scored on their teamwork and creativity by local entrepreneurs and business development professionals.

The Prince's Trust is also running an Exploring Enterprise workshop over four-days looking at self-employment, personal money management; how to establish a market position; defining a target market, keeping customers, pricing and mentoring.

Tom Bewick, chief executive of Enterprise UK, which founded the week, said the country had never needed entrepreneurs so much.
