Work starts on £4m surgery for 9,000 patients

WORK has started on a new health centre which will benefit 9,000 patients in north Leeds.

The new 4m centre is being built at the junction of Otley Old Road and Iveson Approach and will replace the existing Tinshill Lane practice.

The development is being provided and funded by Assura Property, a specialist and investor in primary care premises.

When it opens in spring 2011 patients will transfer to the new centre which will be known as Ireland Wood Surgery.

It will provide significantly more space than the existing surgery which is in a converted house and will include an on-site pharmacy.

Christine Gaughran, managing partner of the Tinshill Lane Surgery, said: "It is excellent news that building work on the new surgery is starting. Patients, doctors and staff will all benefit hugely from having modern spacious facilities which will enable us to provide our high standards of medical care in a more effective way in keeping with the demands of a modern 21st century NHS."

The Croft and Tinshill Medical Practice's other surgery at the New Croft in Horsforth, will continue unaffected by the move.

Amanda Horley, Assura's property development manager, said: "After lots of hard work by the Tinshill Practice and the development team, we are delighted to be starting construction for what will be a superb new health facility for this part of north Leeds."

In addition to 12,916 sq ft of space for the surgery and pharmacy, Assura is building in at its own cost an extra 3,875 sq ft of space, approximately 25 per cent of the whole development.

Ms Horley added: "This will future proof the building allowing for expansion or additional services at a later date in a very cost efficient way," added Ms Horley.

Assura's development and build team includes Leeds-based Abstract Healthcare as developers, P+HS Architects and Tolent Construction as building contractor.
