WYG reaches for the highest level

ENGINEERING consultant WYG is working on the development of England's highest bridge.

The Leeds-based firm, which earlier this year changed its name from White Young Green, helped to obtain planning permission for a new highway bridge across the River Wear in Sunderland.

WYG said the 190m-tall bridge will improve transport links and reduce congestion, while helping with the regeneration of the city.

Members of Sunderland City Council committee backed the planning application for the River Wear bridge.

Crossing the river from Castletown on the north side to Pallion on the south, the cable-stay bridge will have two independent curving steel masts.

The suspended deck will span 336m and will consist of two carriageways, alongside pedestrian and cycle paths.

It will be suspended some 16 to to 20 metres above the River Wear.

Construction is planned to start in 2012 with completion in 2015.
