Xeros goes for a spin in the States to help cut carbon footprint laundry causes

The Rotherham-based environmentally friendly cleaning company, which was a spin-out from the University of Leeds, saw its system installed in the United States last month

It was introduced at Manchester New Hampshire’s Sterling Linen Services, a linen processing and rental service for area hotels, hospitals and restaurants which was founded in 1986.

Xeros is the brand name for the patented polymer-based technology born from the work of leading polymer chemist Professor Stephen Burkinshaw at the textile design department of the University of Leeds.

“Our scientific breakthrough in the UK combined with forward-thinking US entrepreneurs is a great example of how our two countries can come together to lessen laundry’s carbon footprint,” said Bill Westwater, chief executive of Xeros, which is based at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham.

Xeros will introduce an official roll-out to the commercial laundry marketplace at the 2013 Clean Show, a trade show in New Orleans, with a household sized machine in development for launch in 2014.

“We had the honour of previewing this exciting new technology to many of our 800 US dry cleaning affiliates over the past two years.

“We believe Xeros will be embraced by our industry because of the significant cost savings and environmental benefits it brings,” said Tim Maxwell, who is president of dry cleaning brand GreenEarth Cleaning, which operates in 42 countries.
