Two years later he became general manager for risk and planning, with responsibility for risk and capital management across the group.

Iain Cornish, chief executive of the Yorkshire, said: "Robin has made a significant contribution to managing the risks and planning the society's future strategy during a period of great change for the organisation.

"His knowledge of the society and experience in finance, risk management and strategic planning equip him to be an excellent finance director".

Mr Cornish also paid tribute to Mr Gosling, who is stepping down after nine years as finance director.

"Andrew has successfully managed the society's finances during the worst economic recession on record. He has skilfully provided a balance between financial security and delivery of long-term value to our members.

"He leaves the Yorkshire extremely well placed to continue as a financially strong mutual organisation and we thank him for his contribution and wish him well in his retirement".

Last month the Yorkshire posted an annual loss for the first time in its 146-year history. It fell 12.5m into the red but insisted it had protected its members from the effects of the recession.

It also saw a significant improvement in the second half of the year and has a strong capital position.
