Yorkshire Water opens the way for training schemes for new graduates

The utility provider is recruiting in five areas – data science, operations, strategy and regulation, commercial and science.

The scheme allows recent university graduates to join the business on a two-year development programme.

In the first year, graduates experience four placements in different areas of the business, then choose a specialism and role to complete their final year. After the initial two years the graduates are supported with finding a permanent role that matches their strengths and career aspirations.

Placements involve shadowing team members in their 
day-to-day role on operational or office sites, contributing to regulatory deadlines or working on business-critical projects.

Amin Daji, graduate and apprentice recruitment officer at Yorkshire Water, said: “We’re looking for people that have a motivation to learn and an enthusiasm to work within the water industry.

“The graduate scheme is a great opportunity for development and a really unique way to get to know the business. We’re looking forward to welcoming our next cohort in 2021.”

The news will be welcome to young people. Yorkshire has some of the highest levels of youth unemployment in the country, with one in 10 young people being out of work in some areas.

Last September Yorkshire Water hired 17 graduates – a record for the business.

The news comes as the firm began laying 1km of clean water pipes and investing almost £1million to support the redevelopment of the south of Leeds city centre.

Planned developments in Holbeck will add 29 commercial and 3,011 domestic properties to the water network over the next two years, something it said would build resilience in the network to accommodate the new properties.
