Yorkshireman re-appointed as Man bankers’ president

The Isle of Man Bankers’ Association has announced that Yorkshireman Mark Waterhouse has been appointed president for an unprecedented second term of office.

Mr Waterhouse, who was born and bred in Leeds, moved to the Isle of Man in 1997 following his appointment as managing director of Halifax International, Isle of Man Limited.

Prior to his move he was well known within the banking community in the Leeds area having been branch manager of the Dewsbury, Leeds City Square, Armley and head office branches of the Leeds Permanent Building Society.

He has held a number of key positions with international banks and is now the chief operating officer of Zurich Bank International Limited, where he has worked for the last five years.

Since moving to the Isle of Man, Mr Waterhouse has played a significant role in the banking industry first with the Building Societies’ Association and then the Isle of Man Bankers’ Association where he was president.

In 2000 following the merger of four separate banking representative bodies – the Association of Manx Bankers, the Isle of Man Bankers’ Association, the Isle of Man Building Societies’ Association and the Clearing Banks’ Trust Companies – he became president of the then newly formed Association of Licensed Banks.

He has been a regular member of the council ever since and now once again holds the presidency of the renamed Isle of Man Bankers’ Association.

Mr Waterhouse said he is looking forward to working with and representing the 23 licensed banks on the Isle of Man in the current challenging environment.

During his time in Yorkshire, Mr Waterhouse was the last Leeds Permanent branch manager in the head office branch on The Headrow before it was redeveloped into the Leeds Lites complex.

Shortly after the opening of a new Leeds Permanent branch further up The Headrow, on the corner of Albion Street, the Leeds merged with the Halifax.

Soon after the merger Mr Waterhouse was appointed district manager in Huddersfield with responsibility for the three Huddersfield branches and the Mirfield and Brighouse offices.

Based in Cloth Hall Street, he was also responsible for 10 Halifax agencies in the area.

Mr Waterhouse was also appointed managing director of Halifax International in Jersey and was responsible for merging the two offshore operations into a single legal entity with offices in both the Isle of Man and Jersey.

Mr Waterhouse was also formerly a council member of the Jersey Bankers Association.

Lloyds bought Halifax Bank of Scotland at the height of the banking crisis.

Mr Waterhouse, most of whose family continue to live in the Leeds area, lives in the Isle of Man with his wife and two children.
