Yorkshireman takes on leading role with Institute of Directors

The former senior partner of law firm Eversheds is the outgoing chairman of mechanical and electrical contractor NG Bailey, one of Yorkshire’s largest family-owned businesses.

He will serve alongside Ian Dormer, the chairman.

Mr Thompson told the Yorkshire Post: “I will absolutely use my Yorkshire knowledge to influence wherever I can. We have a national view rather than a London or provincial view... (but we will) bang the drum for the regions to make sure that Yorkshire gets its fair crack of the whip in Government, which is not always the case.”

He highlighted the North-South divide. “The important thing is to maintain the southern growth and make sure the rest of the country gets up to speed,” added Mr Thompson. He said members are feeling more confident and believe that business is slowly getting better, rather than flatlining or deteriorating.

Mr Thompson has a long-standing relationship with the IoD. He was regional chairman from 2005-2009 and has been a member of the national board since 2008.

Ian Dormer, chairman of the IoD, “Nimble brings a significant wealth and breadth of experience both within the business world and within the IoD.

“I look forward to working more closely with him and have not doubt that he will meet the high bar set by Philippa Foster-Back, [who leaves the IoD following three terms of office], whose input and wise counsel have been hugely valued by the board.”

Mr Thompson stands down as chairman of NG Bailey this summer after 12 years in the role.

His non-executive directorships include Henderson Insurance Brokers and Skipton Building Society.
