ASDA has announced plans to cut the price of fuel at their pumps for the fourth weekend in a row.

From this Saturday (8 Dec), customers will see the price of a litre of fuel drop by two pence, as the wholesale cost of petrol continues to fall.

This effectively means that those at the pump will pay no more than 114.7ppl on unleaded fuels and 125.7ppl on diesel.

Not only is this the supermarket’s fourth weekend of price cuts in as many weeks, it’s also their sixth price drop since 26 October.

Asda’s senior fuel buyer, Dave Tyrer said, “With only a few weeks until Christmas we’re pleased we can do our bit to make our customers’ hard-earned cash go a little further.”

‘Other supermarkets must compete’

RAC fuel spokesperson Simon Williams told The Mirror, “We need reductions in the wholesale price to be passed on quickly in the same way increases are when oil is going up.

“Last month we saw the largest drop in petrol prices in four years. It’s vital the other supermarkets start to compete with Asda in the way they were doing two months ago.”

“Without this, other retailers will not bring their prices down quickly enough and the UK average prices will not fall to the level they should be at. In the season of goodwill we need retailers to charge motorists a fair price for both petrol and diesel.”

Earlier this week, the RAC warned that UK motorists could face a hike in fuel prices if members of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) agree to reduce oil production as it is believed they will.

Opec members nations – which include Saudi Arabia, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates – met on Thursday to discuss the scaling down of oil production in order to combat a 25 per cent price crash.

The RAC said in a statement, “Any agreement to curb oil production could push up the price, and in turn wholesale fuel prices – which could mean higher UK petrol and diesel prices.”
