With Prime Minister David Cameron having now confirmed that the in-out referendum will take place on Thursday, June 23, a panel of experts including academics and representatives from the farming industry will explore the arguments for and against a result either way at Tennants Garden Rooms in Leyburn on Thursday, March 10.

The free to attend discussion, which has been organised by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, will also feature a question and answer session.

Nigel Pulling, the Society’s chief executive, said members of the farming community were struggling to decide what would be best for the industry.

He said: “The referendum is at the top of the Government’s agenda but the lack of information about the issues means most people are struggling to make an informed decision. Our aim is not to try to influence how people vote, but to inform debate and stimulate discussion.”

A report commissioned by the Society, ‘Brexit and Agriculture’, will underpin the Leyburn discussion. The document was produced by the Farmer-Scientist Network, led by Wyn Grant, politics professor at Warwick University.

Richard Wells, a former North of England correspondent for BBC radio and television news will chair proceeding, and will be joined by speakers Prof Grant, Leeds University’s Prof Michael Cardwell and farmers Bill Cowling and Malcolm Fewster.

It follows a similar event at the Great Yorkshire Showground attended by more than 200 people.
