HUNDREDS of entries of livestock brought a healthy trade to some of the region's auction marts over the Easter weekend.

The annual Easter Saturday show and sale at Pateley Bridge had a good entry of 144 cattle, including 110 store cattle, and two cows with calves at foot.

The strong show of cattle stretched the expertise of judge Jeremy Waind of Malton who placed W&R Verity’s British blue heifers in first, second and third places in the singles class. Each was sold to Steven White of Barnsley for £1,200, £1,120 and £990 respectively.

The class for a pair heifer was won by GF Harker & Sons of Stean which sold to G Watson of Sawley for £815.

The first prize steer was awarded to a Limousin shown by JA Stoney and Son of Bewerley, while the class for a pair of steers was won by S Poulter which sold to G Thornton of Knaresborough for £1,000.

There was a good trade for summer store cattle with a 98 per cent clearance rate. Cows and calves at foot fetched up to £1,840.

At Skipton Auction Mart’s weekly bank holiday sale, 27 Spring lambs sold at an average of £113.34 per head, with Robert Towers, of Camp House Farm, Farleton, Lancaster, and Charles Marwood, of Whenby, near York, leading the way with Charollais-cross consign-ments.

Mr Towers sold a total of six pens at three figure prices, including three at £116 per head, while Mr Marwood sold four £100-plus pens to highs of £114.

The 1,744 old season lambs on parade sold to an overall average of £83.03 per head, compared to £79 the previous week, and the day’s principal per head price fell to a £121 Texel pen from Neil Tattersall, of Ellerton, York.

Beltex pens sold to a top of £120 per head.

Cull ewes averaged £75.22 per head and cast rams £83.70 each, both up on the previous week.

Hellifield’s William Watson was responsible for the top price pens of Texel ewes at £138.50 and £134.50, while the pick of the rams, a £127.50 Texel, was presented by the Walmsley family, of D&A Livestock, Harrogate.
