The trainer has earmarked the Dubai Turf after the horse rolled back the years to land the Group Two Singspiel Stakes at Meydan.

The grey was winning for the first time since the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2019 – with that Group One success coming three months after he had finished third in the Dubai Turf.

The eight-year-old only had two horses behind him turning into the straight, but it was a one-horse race once he hit top gear under Adrie de Vries.

O’Meara added: “You’d like to think the Dubai Turf would be the target. There’s a bit of water to go under the bridge before then. There might be a race in February and hopefully on to World Cup night. He’s staying over in Dubai.”

O’Meara, who trains at Upper Helmsey, was a moderately successful jump jockey before switching to the training ranks, a path now being taken by Adam Nicol.

This week Nicol, who will always be associated with Catterick trainer Phil Kirby’s ever popular Lady Buttons, saddled his first winner when Wise Eagle claimed a narrow victory at Newcastle. Just his third runner from his family’s stables close to the Northumbria coast, Wise Eagle displayed a willing attitude under Craig Nichol to see off the strong-travelling Dear Sire by a short head.

Nicol added: “I’m delighted – I couldn’t have asked for a better start. We’ve got three horses in training – my mum owns the yard in Seahouses in Northumberland. I’ve had four stables and the plan is to have another four, but we’re just going to stay small.

“This horse ran a blinder at Catterick.

“I’m not sure what happened, but he came back with a big hematoma on his leg, so I thought he ran very well considering. We’ve had him in the sea since then, which has helped with the hematoma.

“We’ll see how he is, but we might go back over hurdles at Catterick on February 5 or Musselburgh on February 7. There’s no mad panic.”
