Apprenticeship award for woman with new direction

A WOMAN who swapped university life to train to be a plumber has been honoured by an award celebrating the success of apprentices.

Dionne Flemming, 30, from Chapletown, Leeds, was named the Intermediate Apprentice of the Year at the Leeds Apprenticeship Awards.

She was nominated by her employer East North East Homes. She said: “I had started a university course but the cost combined with the fact that I wasn’t guaranteed a job at the end made me think again about what I wanted to do. I have always been very practical and decided to try college instead and originally did an NVQ Level two diploma in plastering, plumbing and joinery.”

She started an apprenticeship with East North East Homes and joined a two-year course at Leeds College of Building, where she studies one day a week and spends four days working.
