Building school set for new premises

A £15M training centre for building students may appear near Leeds city centre.

A planning application for the premises will be submitted this month by Leeds College of Building with the intention of starting work later this year and opening the building in 2015.

The college said the development is part of a long-term plan to reduce six sites to three.

The training centre should be built on a site bought from Yorkshire Design Group in Hunslet Lane and Black Bull Street.

It will serve a large proportion of the college’s 7,500 students with lessons also continuing at sites on North Street and Millwright Street.

The centre will provide a training in traditional skills such as technical and electrical, roofing and brickwork, as well as in the expanding fields of renewable and sustainability technologies.

Leeds principal Ian Billyard said: “This is extremely good news for our students, staff and the construction industry as a whole.

“The deal has been many years in the making and we feel that the location, which is just a 10 minute walk from Leeds city bus station and Leeds train station, is ideal for our needs.”

He added: “Leeds College of Building was established in 1960 and we are still the only specialist further education construction college in the UK.

“We have built a sound reputation with employers, students, schools and the community and we look forward to this exciting chapter in our very successful story.”

The college has appointed architects Fuse Studios to design the new building, Davis Langdon as project managers and the engineers have been named as Buro Happold.
