Children back call for slower driving speeds

MORE than 6,500 school children across region will join a national march today urging motorists to drive at 20mph or more slowly around schools, homes and shops.

The pupils from 43 schools in Yorkshire are taking part in the Go 20 giant “walking bus” organised by Huddersfield-based road safety charity Brake.

The event aims to get drivers to slow down to protect children and allow them to walk more.

Brake’s deputy chief executive Julie Townsend, said: “Many parents are in a difficult situation when it comes to letting their kids walk or cycle, often forced to weigh up the benefits of their kids being active and getting out and about with the risk of their child being knocked down and hurt.

“We need to make it easier for them by making roads safer for children and people of all ages, to help kids have the fun, active childhood they deserve.”
