City views inspire young pupils

SIX primary school pupils have had their work chosen for an exhibition showing “Views of York” in a competition run by the city’s civic trust.

Christian Cain, from the Minster School, is pictured with his winning entry The Minster on a Windy Day.

The other winners were Rosie Carter, of Lakeside School with her painting The Shambles; Kevin Chirayil, of Lord Deramore’s School, with his painting The Bridge of York; Amy Foster, St Paul’s School with her painting In a Different Light; Molly Hazelwood, St Paul’s School with her painting St Mary’s Abbey and Daniel Hicks, of the Minster School with his painting Storm approaching the Chapter House.

Eleven primary schools entered the competition and there were over 300 entries judged by local artists, Jake Attree and Patrick Smith, curator of Art at York City Art Gallery Laura Turner and Robert Teed, owner of The School House Gallery in Peasholme Green. The primary school children were challenged to create a painting or drawing of “a specific view that was meaningful to them.“

Mr Smith said that the standard was exceptionally high.

He added: “It was good to see that drawing is still live and doing well given the modern digital world in which we now live.”

The exhibition is being held at Fairfax House.
