College jobs to go in funding cuts

ALMOST 100 jobs are set to go at one of the largest further education colleges in the country because of funding cuts.

Leeds City College, which employs more than 2,300 staff, is proposing to make 96 job cuts.

In a statement, college principal Peter Roberts said the college wanted to achieve the job losses through voluntary redundancy and severance schemes.

“We are really hopeful that these job losses, which apply to some but not all areas of our activity, will be achieved through voluntary redundancy and voluntary severance schemes.

“Redeployment opportunities will be maximised and the college has already implemented a managed vacancy freeze.”

The potential cut in the workforce is expected to save around £2m.

There will be a 45-day consultation period over the proposed job losses.

The college was granted official status in January 2009 through the merger of Park Lane College, Leeds Thomas Danby College and Leeds College of Technology.

Last year it expanded further with the merger of the three sites of Joseph Priestley College in Rothwell, Beeston and Morley.

It also owns Leeds College of Music, which retains its own identity.
