College staff in strike vote after job cuts

MEMBERS of the University and College Union (UCU) at Kirklees College are being balloted over strike action in a row over job losses and cuts to staff pay and conditions.

The union says staff are furious that more than 50 jobs are going at the college in Huddersfield.

It claimed the cuts were linked to the creation of new campus buildings in the town costing more than £81m.

UCU official Julie Kelley said: “Strike action is always a last resort, but pursuing the jobs axe route, along with pay cuts, will do nothing for the reputation of Kirklees College. Style is never a replacement for substance and fewer teachers with bigger classes and increased workloads is a poor return for new buildings.”

The college was unavailable for comment yesterday.
