College takes honours as best-placed independent

In a table measuring the level of pupils achieving at least five A* to C grades in English and maths in the exams last summer the private school was the only one in the region to achieve a 100 per cent score.

Last summer all 102 of the school’s pupils in year 11 achieved the key benchmark in their GCSEs. The figures showing the top 200 schools across the country also included another seven schools from the independent sector in the region The Grammar School at Leeds had 99 per cent of pupils making the grade, while 98 per cent achieved it at Bradford Grammar, Sheffield High School for girls, Wakefield Girls High, St Peter’s School in York, Huddersfield Grammar and Queen Elizabeth Grammar School (QEGS) in Wakefield.

QEGS was the top ranked private school in Yorkshire for A-levels and equivalent qualifications based on average student point score. Other private schools named in the top 200 nationally included Wakefield Girls, Hymers, Queen Ethelburga’s College near York, Scarborough College and Bootham School in York
