Designs on travel impress judges

The design skills of two students from South Yorkshire impressed judges as their vision for a 21st century train picked up the top prize at an engineering competition.

Abbi Fitter, left, and Shelby Cound, both 17, from Hillsborough College, in Sheffield, were yesterday selected as winners of a challenge to create a detailed scale model of a next generation rail carriage. The competition organised by Northern Rail and the Young People's Enterprise Forum saw seven student teams from the region taking part in the event at Sheffield Hallam University.

Judge Stuart Draper said: "We were blown away by Hillborough College's design that showed engineering skills beyond their years.

"Engineering offers a career where young people not only get to use their creativity, but can also shape the future and make a difference to the way that we live our lives."
