Firm in the frame to sponsor college

The german manufacturer behind a new wind turbine factory in Hull may sponsor a university technical college in the city.

A coalition of MPs, Hull Council, the Local Enterprise Partnership and the University of Hull will apply to the Department for Education for the college, probably on the site of Endeavour School. As revealed in The Yorkshire Post earlier this year, Siemens is in discussions to sponsor the UTC, along with other major employers.

West Hull and Hessle MP Alan Johnson said: “UTCs seek to address the historic failing in the British system which is the absence of high quality vocational education from age 14. A UTC sponsored by Siemens and other local employers can give our youngsters a leading edge in acquiring the necessary skills for this highly-qualified, highly-paid work.”

The school, which will close in 2015, has been earmarked for an adult education and training complex.
