Heads renew attack on ‘crude league tables’

TEACHING unions agreed not to repeat the boycott of standard assessment tests this year after Education Secretary Michael Gove agreed to launching an independent review of the national testing of 11-year-olds.

The review carried out by Lord Bew has callled for the creative writing test within the Sats to be scrapped.

He said teachers should be able to judge pupil’s creative writing skills outside of a national test .

However his review, which was commissioned last year and announced its findings in June, recommended that primary school children should still face official tests to measure their spelling, grammar and punctuation as well as reading and maths.
