High flying Leeds pupils set for pilot training

However Jedd Waterson and Rajandeep Grewal are not going there to study at the university but at the city’s aviation academy.

The two Fulneck pupils are embarking upon their pilot training.

The 18-year-olds have had a career in aviation in their sights for some time, with both taking weekly flying lessons for the last 18 months at Multiflight flight training centre, at Leeds Bradford International Airport.

And, with their results confirmed today, the pair are embarking upon pilot training with the Oxford Aviation Academy this September.

Fulneck School Principal Deborah Newman said: “I was delighted to hear that both Jedd and Rajandeep have been accepted to train as pilots.

“While their heads may have been literally in the clouds for the last year, they have well and truly had their feet on the ground.

“Both have shown a commendable commitment to their chosen career, working hard to learn how to fly at the same time as studying for their A-Level examinations.

“They knew they had to study hard, and their efforts have been rewarded today.”

Mrs Newman said the school, which was founded in 1753, was celebrating “outstanding” A-level successes with many excellent individual performances.

Individual successes included head boy, Sean Burns, who achieved straight A grades, securing him a place to read Medicine at Hull York Medical School; and head girl, Ollivia Dale, who will take up her place at Lancaster University to read psychology.

A number of students will be taking up places at some of the UK’s top universities; Nicholas Jenkins will study ancient history at Birmingham University, Claude Jin has secured a place to study maths at Edinburgh and Daniel Calvert will begin a chemical engineering degree at Newcastle.

Mrs Newman added: “We are exceedingly proud of the outstanding success of our sixth form students this year.

“It has been a very busy morning and I am delighted that so many of our students have secured their first choice of university.”
