Hull students score 100 per cent pass rate

STUDENTS at a Hull school have excelled in the sciences on A-level results day.

Hymers College students enjoyed a 100 per cent pass rate across all subjects with more than 40 per cent of exams sat earning either an A* or A grade this year.

Some of the private school’s top performers achieved the new top grade in science and maths subjects - traditionally thought of as being the most tough.

Apurva Chitnis achieved five A*s in chemistry, maths, further maths, physics and electronics with an A in general studies. He is going on to read Engineering at Emmanuel College, Cambridge.

Antony Scott picked up four A*s in chemistry, maths, further maths, and physics, with an A in general studies. He is also going to Cambridge to read natural sciences. He has also achieved a choral scholarship.

Sam Nicholls was another of the school’s star science students. He achieved four A*s in chemistry, maths, further maths, and physics. He came top in the UK in the Physics Olympiad competition at GCSE level in 2009 and recently went on to represent Great Britain at the 42nd International Physics Olympiad in Bangkok in July, rated one of the top five students in the UK. Sam is going on to read mechanical engineering at Durham University.

Hymers College’s headmaster David Elstone said: “I am delighted with this excellent set of A-level results. The students and their teachers have worked extremely hard and are to be congratulated.”
