Labour looks to forces to instill ‘service ethos’

LABOUR is considering establishing a network of specialist “service schools” staffed by military personnel.

The proposal is one of several ideas being considered by the party to give young people the chance to benefit from the values and expertise of the armed forces.

Shadow Education Secretary Stephen Twigg said they also wanted to see more Combined Cadet Forces in state schools.

Labour believes specialist service schools could be particularly popular in more deprived areas of the country.

“The armed forces can make an important contribution to the nation not just on the battlefield but by embedding the standards and values they embody within our social fabric,” Mr Twigg said.

“The ‘service ethos’ emphasises the importance of character formation and high ethical standards, as well as the development of crucial skills such as team-working.

“We are exploring how we can give more of our young people the opportunity to benefit from the skills, talents and insights of our service community.”
