Leeds primary shortlisted for International School of the Year prize

Oakwood Primary Academy, in Harehills, is one of eight schools from across the country to make the final of the competition run by TES (Times Education Supplement).

Oakwood has a partnership with Colegio Americano de Tabasco in Villahermosa, Tabasco, Mexico. And last year six Mexican teachers came to the school. 

Pupils also sit on a Global Committee at Oakwood – a sub group of the school council.

It is made up of students from across key stage two year groups who are democratically elected and expected to get involved in the planning of the school’s international work.

The International School prize is part of the TES School Awards, now in its eighth year. Jo Speak, the head of school at Oakwood said: “The whole school are delighted to have been shortlisted for the International School of the Year Award and are thrilled that we are able to celebrate our international contribution at the TES Awards.

“We have weaved international relationships into the tapestry of the academy, which has helped to establish our own international community where all pupils feel safe, valued and respected.

“Our students are fortunate to be able to develop a wide cultural awareness on a daily basis. We hope we can go all the way.”

Oakwood is a part of the Co-operative Academies Trust. Trust director Frank Norris, said “This is an incredible achievement for Oakwood.

“All the staff are so passionate about the work that they do and it is a part of the DNA of the academy and it all fits wonderfully with the co-operative values of equality, social responsibility and solidarity.”

The final takes place on Friday June 24 at a ceremony in London.
