Leeds University moves up new league tables earning Yorkshire's highest ranking

The Complete University Guide’s tables have shown Leeds climbing for four years in a row to 16th and ending York’s nine-year stint as the top university in the region.

The guide for 2017 has been released today.

Its publishers measure universities on a range of areas including student satisfaction, the quality of a university’s research, its degree results and graduate job prospects.

Leeds Trinity and Leeds Beckett Universities both achieved a similar ranking to last year in the latest table published today.

The guide’s authors say the consistency of its results show that it is a “robust and credible” guide for people considering which university to apply for.

Leeds Trinity University was ranked 102nd falling one place compared with last year, while Leeds Beckett University was ranked at 114th both the same rank as last year.

The tables are compiled using ten measures: Student satisfaction, research quality, research intensity, entry standards, student: staff ratio; spending on academic services; spending on student facilities; good honours degrees achieved; graduate prospects and completion.

The guide’s table measures the performance of 127 higher education institutions across the country.

In separate listings covering 70 degree subjects, Leeds appears in the top ten for 16 of the 52 subjects it offers. York and Sheffield both appear in eight top tens apiece, with Bradford in four; Sheffield Hallam in two; and Hull and Huddersfield in one each. However no university from Yorkshire finishes top of a subject table.

Bradford University was one of the biggest climbers nationally. It moved up ten places to be the fourth highest ranked university in Yorkshire and just outside the top 50 nationally.

Sheffield is ranked third highest in Yorkshire in 28th position nationally.
