New college course targets human trafficking

A NEW course believed to be the first of its kind in the country has been launched by a Yorkshire college to raise awareness of human trafficking and equip professionals and the public with the skills to identify and report it.

Human Trafficking Uncovered is aimed at professionals in the public, private and voluntary sectors who come into contact with perpetrators and victims but is also available to members of the public.

The online course is being delivered by Sheffield College and developed by Nick Kinsella, a former senior police officer and anti-trafficking expert, who led the UK Human Trafficking Centre from 2006 to 2010 when it was based in Sheffield. He said: “Human trafficking is an extremely serious crime that is often hidden.

“Many people think of it as remote, something that happens abroad. But human trafficking is far more widespread than you think – it is happening right now on your streets and in your communities.

“The exploitation ranges from adults and children being abused for sexual exploitation, to them being coerced through threats or violence to make fraudulent welfare claims.”
