New course launched at college for apprentices

The course which is the first of its kind in the region is being launched at Leeds College of Building on Friday.

There will be 14 new apprentices signing up to the four-year Civil Engineering Advanced Technician Apprenticeship Employers Consortium course.

Leeds College of Building’s higher education faculty director Brian Duffy said: “This is an incredibly exciting time for the college as we have established an industry specific programme that is ideal for technicians working in the areas of civil or structural engineering or highways and transportation.”

The course has been established in association with the Institute of Civil Engineering (ICE), the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) and the Civil Engineering Apprenticeship Consortium.

Leeds College of Building’s principal Ian Billyard said: “Civil Engineers are responsible for the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and built environment and we are delighted that so many of the industry’s major companies will be attending the launch of this outstanding new framework.”

Employees and potential apprentices will be given the chance to find out about the college programme at the event on Friday.

Leeds College of Building’s higher education assistant faculty director Chris Wales says: “Anyone who is interested in being part of a built environment apprenticeship programme must be employed in the construction industry and have four GCSEs at grades A*-C including English, maths and science.”
