Pioneering technical school set for rise in female applications

THE PRINCIPAL of the first university technical college in Yorkshire hopes it is the first of many offering a career focused education to pupils.

The UTC in Sheffield opened last year in a new £9.9m city centre building.

UTCs are being promoted by the Baker Dearing Trust charity and the Government as a new way of giving an advanced practical education to pupils.

The next one to open in the region is set to be in Scunthorpe. This UTC will specialise in engineering and renewable energy. There are also plans for a new UTC in Leeds which hopes to get the go-ahead to open next year.

Nick Crew said the key to a successful UTC was building partnerships with local employers in areas where skilled workforce was needed.
