Principal’s pride as Ofsted hails ‘smiling’ pupils at city academy

THE principal of a Hull school has told of his pride at an Ofsted inspection which praises both its leadership and its pupils.

The Archbishop Sentamu Academy is rated as good by the inspection watchdog.

The school, which opened in the east of the city in 2008, is said to have outstanding leadership and management.

The behaviour and safety of pupils are also rated as outstanding, which is the highest grade that Ofsted awards.

Principal Andrew Chubb said the positive report reflected the five years of continual improvement that the academy had delivered since it opened.

He said: “This is profoundly good report. I think the thing that pleases me most about it is the praise for the skill and hard work of staff and the praise for our children. It says they ‘walk confidently down the corridors and hold doors open for adults with a smile’. I have never read comments like this in an Ofsted report before.”

The school has been ranked in the top 50 nationally for the past two years for delivering the biggest year-on-year improvements in GCSEs.

The academy was ranked in the top 50 for the period between 2009 and 2012 and also 2010 and 2013.

Ofsted has also praised two other schools in the region, with reports rating them as good.
