£10m extra for star teachers in tough schools

New cash is to be pumped into training good teachers working in schools in disadvantaged area.

An extra £10m is to be given to a charity dedicated to developing future school leaders in a move benefiting hundreds of thousands of children, the Department for Education (DfE) said.

Under the scheme run by charity Teaching Leaders, staff already working in challenging schools who could become heads of departments are sent on a two-year training programme.

Over 125,000 children from disadvantaged homes in 365 schools have had help from these teachers since 2008, the DfE said, and the new funding will double the number from 766 to 1,706 by 2015.
