Stars wet to inspire young to raise their sights for teaching charity

sporting stars and an Emmerdale actor will be among the celebrities sent into the classroom next week to inspire pupils from deprived backgrounds.

Teach First, a charity set up to improve the educational attainment of children from low income families, has enlisted the help of famous names who have agreed to become teachers.

Leeds Rhinos star Jamie Jones-Buchanan, former Leeds United greats Gary McAllister and Howard Wilkinson, top Bradford Bulls players Brett Kearny and Heath L’Estrange and Hull North MP Diana Johnson will be taking part in the first annual Teach First week in Yorkshire schools. Elsewhere Emmerdale actor Kelvin Fletcher has also signed up while yachtswoman and environment campaigner Dame Ellen MacArthur and television presenter Adrian Chiles will be taking part in the event in schools in London along with Beverley and Holderness MP Graham Stuart, the chairman of the education select committee.

The guest teachers choose the subject area they wish to cover, drawing on their professional lives to inform their lessons. Kelvin Fletcher will be using his acting skills in a drama class, while Diana Johnson will teach a history lesson and Jamie Jones-Buchanan will be teaching children about keeping healthy.
