Students try out world of finance

STUDENTS at a Yorkshire university have been given the chance to take part in 10-week internships with an accounting firm.

Garbutt and Elliott, which has offices in Leeds and York, has teamed up with the York University to provide two internship places.

The students, Adeoluwa Adeniye, who is studying economics and maths, and Victor Robinson, who is studying physics, will report to the firm’s chairman David Dickson, who is also York University treasurer.

The firm’s head of human resources Chloe Owens said: “As part of our new marketing strategy, there is some significant project work to support our chairman, which provided a great opportunity for an external resource.

“This is the first year we have taken part in York University internship scheme.

“We worked with the university to design a specific project brief, and they then advertised the internship to their students and provided us with a shortlist of candidates.

“The candidates went through an interview selection process with us, resulting in Adeoluwa and Victor’s appointments.

Mr Dickson said: “We are delighted to welcome two talented students to Garbutt and Elliott for the summer. We are sure they will be of tremendous help to us and in turn they will benefit from the experience and we are especially pleased to take part in such a rewarding scheme with a world-class university.”

Jennifer Mowat, who runs the University’s Student Internship Bureau, said: “The programme has been growing over the last couple of years.

“It’s extremely motivating that local companies such as Garbutt and Elliott recognise the value of paid work experience.

“Internships are a key way for students to apply their academic learning in a practical environment and help them to develop the transferable skills needed to gain a competitive edge in an extremely challenging graduate labour market.”
