Teacher is banned for weirdo slur to pupils

Vasim Shabir was also found to have intimidated a colleague, told boys how to have two girlfriends and get away with it and sought to influence students to falsify their accounts during an investigation into his conduct. The teacher at Vale Academy, in Brigg, has been barred from teaching indefinitely by a National College of Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) panel. He had denied the allegations.

The panel heard that a pupil claimed Mr Shabir had done an impression of a pupil in another class who had learning difficulties, and had used the word weirdo to describe their class. The pupil also alleged he had said; “He’s never had such a big group of weirdo’s banging their heads against a wall.” Mr Shabir denied using the term weirdo but the NCTL panel found the allegation proven.

Mr Shabir had also denied trying to influence pupils but the panel found this allegation proven on the balance of probabilities. And it found that he had used swearwords in the classroom, that he had told boys how to have more than one girlfriend and get away with it and talked about how he had more than one girlfriend who he would communicate with using different mobile phones.

One pupil said he was “constantly telling us about his love life and how much of a player he is.”

Mr Shabir denied having discussed personal matters but the NCTL found the allegation proven and that by making such comments he showed “an overall disregard and lack of respect for women.”

The panel also found that he had used his mobile during lessons.

In making a decision on behalf of the Education Secretary Nicky Morgan, Alan Meyrick said; “Mr Shabir disregarded the policies and practices of the school and the wider profession. He sought to influence pupils who were asked to provide an account of events in an investigation into his conduct.

“He acted in a manner which was derogatory towards girls. He used language which was unacceptable and inappropriate in the classroom, and used his mobile phone in the face of clear instructions not to and in breach of school policy. He also behaved in an intimidating manner in dealing with a member of staff.”
