The federation will bring together Bainbridge, Askrigg and West Burton primary schools and will take effect from April 1, the start of the schools’ financial year.

The North Yorkshire County Council said the decision has been taken following a consultation with parents, staff and the community during January and February.

The schools already work together in the BAWB (Bainbridge, Askrigg and West Burton) Collaboration.

Under the federation, the three schools will each retain their names and identities. The federation process has been supported by North Yorkshire County Council and the CE Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales.

“We fully support this decision,” said County Councillor Arthur Barker, North Yorkshire County Council’s executive member for schools. “The county council is determined that all children in this county should have access to the highest standards of teaching and learning and enabling schools to work more closely through initiatives like federation is encouraged by the council.

Schools undoubtedly benefit from close collaboration and federation makes this easier. It’s not about merging, closure or losing identity but about sharing facilities where appropriate and using fully the skills of all staff. Federation can help small rural schools remain sustainable and viable on separate sites.”
