Triumph for musical trio

THREE students from a Yorkshire school are celebrating success at a prestigious music competition.

The pupils from the Mount School in York returned from the Catrine Basil music awards, held at Sidcot School, in Bristol, with accolades and trophies.

Eleanor Audet won the vocal class, Elizabeth Sham was the winner in the piano class, while Catriona McDermid triumphed in two categories: the woodwind class and the original composition section with her piece, Elegy.

Catriona, who is currently in the school’s sixth form, has been offered a place at Lincoln College, Oxford, to read music and a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music in London.

Derek Chivers, head of music at the Mount School said: “The competition at the awards was very strong this year, with some excellent performances.

“We are exceptionally pleased and proud of all three students who practised and worked hard to ensure that they performed at their best on the day.”

The Catrine Basil Music Awards is a national award involving the seven Quaker Schools in England. All three of the Mount pupils also represented the school at a concert in aid of Home-Start at York Minster last week.
