Truancy linked to maths
UK teenagers are much more likely to skip school than those in high-achieving areas such as Japan and parts of China, according to international research.
It reveals that playing truant is linked to poorer performance in maths.
The study, by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) examined the relationship between missing school and results in international PISA maths tests.
The report said: “Few students in high-performing school systems skip classes or days of school. Skipping classes is associated with a 32-point lower score in mathematics” in the PISA test.
