Universities in Yorkshire are ranked as six of the best.

UNIVERSITIES in three Yorkshire cities have been ranked as being among the best places to study according to a new quality of life survey.

The research measures universities based on a range of factors including academic performance, social life, accommodation costs and crime rates in the area.

Six universities in Leeds, Sheffield and York are ranked in the top 30 in the country in the new table published by Lloyds Bank.

Sheffield, which was ranked as joint top with Newcastle for its social life, is the highest ranked in the region, in ninth position nationally. It is followed by Leeds at 12th.

Sheffield Hallam is ranked 24th, York University is 25th, Leeds Metropolitan is 27th and York St John is 29th.

Durham University topped the student quality of life survey by scoring highly for academic excellence as well as its social life.

Loughborough, Cambridge, Newcastle and Oxford rounded out the top five rankings. It used data from the National Student Survey measuring satisfaction of undergraduates with both their course and university along with figures from HEFCE (The Higher Education Funding Council for England) on the average accommodation costs at each university and the salaries of graduates six months after finishing.

It has also used figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency to identify what percentage of graduates from each university have found jobs after finishing their degree courses
