What do sporting stars from Everton, Leeds United and Yorkshire County Cricket Club have in common with schoolchildren from Dubai, Uganda, Brazil, and a primary school in York?

They all appear in a new video devised by pupils at Clifton Green Primary School to raise money for Sport Relief.

Last year the pupils raised £3,500 for Comic Relief by getting pupils at schools across York to film themselves making funny faces for a compilation video.

Inspired to raise even more for Sport Relief this year, the pupils, with the help of the school’s community outreach worker John Hattam, came up with the idea of filming short snippets of a kick-about, each ending with the stars ‘passing the ball on’ by kicking or throwing it out of shot.

After a plea on Facebook and a short film explaining their goal on YouTube, clips starting flying in from around the world.

Last week, as the final frames were being edited together, 20 of the schools pupils were invited to Melrose Yard Recording Studios in York to record a special chant to use on the video.

Mr Hattam said: “We want to try something a bit different and get lots of people involved.

“We also wanted to show the power of social media and what children can achieve by working together, doing their bit, and creating something quite special - and that will hopefully raise a lot of money for a great cause.”

Among those featured in the final cut are school children from Trinidad and Tobago, Dubai, Uganda, Nepal, Australia, Brazil, Italy, America and across York and the UK. Among the sporting stars are England international and Everton player Ross Barkley, with teammates Phil Jagielka and Romelu Lukaku; Leeds United players Liam Bridcutt and Souleymane Doukara, Yorkshire County Cricket Club captain Andrew Gale and teammates, York City captain Russell Penn; and members of the Norwegian women’s international ice hockey team.

The ball can be seen passed to the BBC Look North sofa, to BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker, the voices behind BBC Radio York, and even students at Cambridge University. North Yorkshire Police also make an appearance.

But the final video, being shown to pupils today, will be a real surprise for the youngsters at Clifton Green.

Mr Hattam added: “It’s all been kept under wraps as to who will be in the final video. They have no idea who will be in it and are all really excited to find out exactly who has sent in a clip.”

The video has already raised more than £400, and only went online today.

“We were originally hoping to raise £1,000,” said Mr Hattam. “But since getting so many sports clubs and schools involved, we’re hoping to smash through that target and match what we raised for Comic Relief last year.”
