Yachtswoman aims to make recycling future plain sailing heady heady

YACHTSWOMAN Ellen Mac-Arthur brings her campaign to promote a sustainable economy to Yorkshire this week when she challenges teenagers to cut the amount of rubbish being sent to landfill sites.

Dame Ellen has launched a charity foundation aimed at highlighting the need for the world to re-use its resources rather than simply consuming them.

A new qualification focusing on the “circular economy” has been launched by a partnership between her foundation and Bradford University.

On Friday she is set to return to the region for an event due to be held at the Royal Armouries in Leeds.

Students aged between 16 and 18 will be challenged to come up with solutions to cut the amount of rubbish sent to landfills each year and explore how materials which our society throws out could be re-used.

She said: “I am looking forward to working with young people in Leeds. Our aim is to provide a framework within which to be creative and innovative, looking at future product design, transport, energy and communications.

“Our economy is still based on a linear ‘take-make-dispose’ model.

“We want young people leaving school understanding the huge opportunities a re-thought of the future can offer.”

The event on Friday in Leeds is part of a tour of the UK.
