Yorkshire bishop to retire next year

THE Bishop of Beverley is to retire next year.

The Right Reverend Martyn Jarrett, 67, will step down on September 30 following 11 years in the role, he confirmed yesterday.

Mr Jarrett, a former Bishop of Burnley, plans to retire to Worksop with his wife Betty. The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, has paid tribute to his work. He said: “Bishop Martyn has served the province with a real pastor’s heart, with cheerfulness and Christian virtue.

“The people and parishes he has looked after as the Provincial Episcopal Visitor will miss him greatly and so will the bishops.

“I will miss his generous and wise counsel, and his friendship. His wife Betty, as a professional counsellor, has helped so many people. She will also be greatly missed.”

Recruitment for a replacement has not yet begun.

The names of two candidates are eventually submitted to the Crown, with a preferred candidate identified, although this is set to change to one name under proposed changes to the Suffragan Bishops Act 1534.
