Captain Sir Tom Moore has been in hospital since Sunday after he tested positive for coronavirus

The Prime Minister is among those sending well wishes to Captain Sir Tom Moore after it was revealed that he was in hospital after testing positive with coronavirus.

People across Britain have been sending messages to support to the 100-year-old charity fundraiser who was taken to Bedford Hospital on Sunday.

The veteran’s family confirmed his illness on Sunday, with a statement on Capt Sir Tom’s Twitter page which said: “He was at home with us until today when he needed additional help with his breathing."

Has Captain Sir Tom Moore been vaccinated?

Captain Sir Tom Moore has yet to receive a vaccination for Covid-19 as he has been taking medication for pneumonia.

How serious is his condition?

Captain Tom’s family confirmed that he was receiving assistance for breathing, but that he had no been admitted to an intensive care unit.

A statement read: “He is being treated in a ward although he is not in ICU.

“The medical care he has received in the last few weeks has been remarkable and we know that the wonderful staff at Bedford Hospital will do all they can to make him comfortable and hopefully return home as soon as possible.

“We understand that everyone will be wishing him well.

“We are of course focussing on my father and will update you when we are able to.”

What is pneumonia?

According to the NHS “pneumonia is swelling (inflammation) of the tissue in one or both lungs. It's usually caused by a bacterial infection. It can also be caused by a virus, such as coronavirus.”

Common symptoms of the illness include the following: a cough, difficulty breathing, rapid heartbeat, high temperature, feeling generally unwell, sweating and shivering, loss of appetite and chest pain.

Serious cases of the illness can lead to pleurisy, sepsis and lung absesses.
