Badges in aid of Leeds hospitals are legacy of love for NHS care

Derek Marshall, from Pudsey, came up with the idea for Love The NHS badges after he and his wife Betty suffered serious health problems.

But the 87-year-old sadly died in March, before he saw the badges go on sale in aid of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Charitable Foundation.

Now Derek’s son Andrew, from Guiseley, is encouraging people to support the fundraising drive: “This is something that dad wanted and I would just love it if we could make this succeed.”

Derek, a granddad-of-eight and great-granddad of seven, had experienced health issues for years including having prostate cancer, a hip replacement and having a pacemaker fitted. His wife Betty also has dementia and has suffered a serious stroke, with carers coming in several times a day to wash and dress her.

To show his thanks, and to give something back to the health service, he approached the charitable foundation with the idea for the badges.

Sharon Evans, fundraising development manager, said: “Over the past few months, we have been developing and designing these wonderful charity badges closely with Derek. Sadly before we had chance to launch them, Derek passed away, so we would like to dedicate them to his memory.

“Every single badge bought will make a huge difference to patients and transform many lives. We hope to see the badges worn all across Yorkshire, before hopefully spreading across the UK.”
