Ban on new residents at ‘failing’ care home

A CARE home in Yorkshire has been banned from admitting new residents without the permission of a watchdog after inspectors found it was failing to protect the safety of residents.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has issued the ban on Oakhaven Care Home in Oakwood, Leeds. The ban follows a series of inspections which showed the home did not meet standards.

Inspectors said some residents who needed active assistance to eat their meals were left without any help at lunch time because staff had left the main dining room. They also discovered there were only two staff members working during the evenings and several examples of poor recording and administration of medication.

Malcolm Bower-Brown, deputy director of the CQC in the North, said: “We will continue to monitor this home carefully and the restriction will remain in place until we are confident that the provider is able to provide the level of service residents and their families have the right to expect.”

The company running the home said last night it took action within 24 hours of concerns being raised in February. “We continue to work closely with CQC to ensure that we continue to meet the required standards,” it added.
