Call for monthly fee to avert NHS cash crisis

Almost half of politicians believe the NHS may no longer be free at the point of need if pressing issues facing the health service are not tackled, a poll suggests today.

A survey of MPs found half believe a free health service could be consigned to the history books if challenges facing the NHS are not addressed among them hospital closures to centre services in specialist units

The cross-party survey by the NHS Confederation found four in five believe their local NHS needs to change. But two thirds said there was insufficient political will to make changes and one in four said they would not back alterations if their constituents opposed them.
