Captain Tom Moore to receive knighthood, Downing Street confirms

National fundraising hero Captain Tom Moore is to be knighted, it can be revealed.

The Yorkshire-born centenarian, who was recently appointed a colonel, is to be recognised for his achievements in raising more than £33m for NHS charities during the coronavirus crisis following an appointment by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Col Tom became a national hero following his efforts to walk 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday in April.

Following his inspiring campaign, the Prime Minister has since personally recommended Col Tom be exceptionally honoured to Her Majesty the Queen, which has been graciously approved by Her Majesty the Queen.

Boris Johnson said: “Colonel Tom’s fantastic fundraising broke records, inspired the whole country and provided us all with a beacon of light through the fog of coronavirus.

“On behalf of everyone who has been moved by his incredible story, I want to say a huge thank you. He’s a true national treasure.”

The announcement follows comedian Ricky Gervais claiming in an interview earlier this month that he thought celebrities should be banned from the Queen's New Year's honours list, reserving accolades instead for frontline workers during the pandemic.

The Government has said it will be giving further details on plans for how key workers will be honoured in the coming months.

A spokeswoman for Number 10 said: “We know there is huge appetite to say thank you to all those supporting the nation during this emergency and doing incredible things day in, day out, up and down the country.

“We will ensure these unsung heroes are recognised in the right way, at the right time.”
