Doncaster's health boss tells public to go 'above and beyond Tier 3 restrictions' in video message

Doncaster’s director of public health Rupert Suckling has urged residents in the South Yorkshire town to “go above and beyond the Tier 3 restrictions” and not travel unless it is essential.

Addressing the borough’s latest seven-day case rate of 530 per 100,000 people, Dr Suckling said in a video message: “This is not good news.

“It’s clear to me that too many people in Doncaster are still meeting up and not following the guidance to keep our distance, to wear face coverings and to wash our hands.

“The infection is spreading very quickly we will need to stop it. If we do not put the fire out now it will continue to flare up and continue burning.

“So I’m asking you all to go above and beyond the Tier 3 restrictions to help keep everyone in the borough safe.”

He said: “Please don’t travel unless it’s essential for you to do so and please stay within Doncaster if you possibly can.”

Doncaster has been in Tier 3 since Saturday, along with the rest of South Yorkshire.

Mr Suckling's comments come as hospitals in the area report higher numbers of Covid-19 patients than during the first wave.

The trust which runs Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI) said they had seen one of their largest daily rises of admissions of patients testing positive for Covid-19 and are now caring for numbers "far beyond the first wave earlier this year".

Rotherham Hospital also reported higher numbers of Covid positive inpatients on Monday than at the height of the first wave.

Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (DBTH) said cases had almost doubled over last Sunday, adding: "In the past 24 hours, we have admitted a number of patients who have tested positive for Covid-19 and, as a result, we are now caring for 201 such individuals - far beyond the first wave earlier this year."
