Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust records 24 new Covid deaths as Yorkshire total rises by 55

Yorkshire hospitals have recorded a further 55 deaths of patients who had tested positive for Covid-19, according to the latest daily statistics.

Figures released by NHS England show 674 deaths were recorded in the country's hospitals in the 24 hours to 4pm on Tuesday, including 24 at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

Patients were aged between 21 and 101. All except 29, aged between 50 and 101, had known underlying health conditions.

The data represents the deaths of hospital patients who had tested positive for Covid-19 in the previous 28 days and whose deaths were recorded in the latest reporting period.

Since April 28 2020, NHS England and NHS Improvement also started to report the number of patient deaths where there has been no Covid-19 positive test result but it is documented as a direct or underlying cause of death in the death certification process.

The figures for the latest reporting period show there were 47 such deaths in England.

Deaths were recorded at the following hospital trusts in Yorkshire and the Humber:

Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust - 3

Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust - 3

According to Government data, a total of 7,794 patients in Yorkshire and the Humber have died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 up to January 4. This equates to 141.6 deaths per 100,000 people since the pandemic began, with the highest daily total being 88 deaths on November 9 2020.

Separate Office for National Statistics data shows there have been a total of 8,476 deaths recorded in Yorkshire and The Humber where the death certificate mentioned Covid-19 as one of the causes. This equates to 154 deaths per 100,000 people since the pandemic began.
